True positives (TP)

True Positives (TP) = patients who have the disease AND the test is positive. In SPSS Crosstabs: set Disease Status as rows (Yes/No) and Test Result as columns (Positive/Negative) → the cell at Disease=Yes, Test=Positive. Example: out of 50 diseased patients, 45 tested positive → TP = 45.

False negatives (FN)

False Negatives (FN) = patients who have the disease BUT the test missed them (negative result). In SPSS Crosstabs: the cell at Disease=Yes, Test=Negative. Example: 5 diseased patients tested negative → FN = 5. Sensitivity = TP ÷ (TP + FN) = 45 ÷ 50 = 90%.
